In his response, Commissioner Micallef reaffirmed that the European Commission remains committed to supporting Ukraine and continues to work closely with Member States to uphold the values of sport and ensure that EU funding is used in line with its objectives and principles.
Estonian Minister of Culture Heidy Purga emphasised the importance of maintaining a united and consistent European position on this matter.
"The joint initiative of Estonia and eight partner countries has attracted the attention of the European Commission. Discussions on the effectiveness of sanctions and on preventing the return of Russia and Belarus to international sport are ongoing," said Minister Purga. "We aim to reach a common understanding at the level of sports ministers and are working to ensure that this issue remains an active topic of discussion within the European Union's Foreign Affairs Council," she added.
Estonia considers it essential to continue close cooperation with European partners to ensure that international sport remains grounded in the principles of fair play, respect for international law and solidarity with Ukraine. Sport must not become a means of advancing the political influence of aggressor states.
